The Tundra Bean Goose (Anser serrirostris) is a rather large, dark brown species of typical goose. This and the Taiga Bean Goose are considered separate species by the American Ornithological Society and the International Ornithologists' Union, but are considered conspecific (under the name of Bean Goose) by other authors.
Subspecies and Breeding Distribution[]
The 2 subspecies of this species are:
- A. s. rossicus (Buturlin, 1933.) - Northern Russian tundra east to the Taymyr Peninsula. Smaller than the nominate type; the bill is short and stubby, with a narrow orange band.
- A. s. serrirostris (Gould, 1852.) - East Siberian tundra. Large in size; the bill is long and stout, with a narrow orange band.
Description[]
It is overall a 68 to 90 cm long dark brown goose that weighs 1.7 to 4 kg and is similar to the Taiga Bean Goose. However, the bill, black at the base and the tip, is thicker and shorter than that of the corresponding species. The legs and feet are also bright orange.
Voice[]
It has a loud honking call, higher in pitch in smaller subspecies. Same goes for the Taiga Bean Goose.
